2011-12 Otta Sealing Programme
Earlier this year the Council tested a number of roading issues through the Annual Plan process. Submissions from the community did not support the continuation of oiling for two reasons, being the cost to the ratepayer and the environmental effects caused by waste oil runoff. On the basis of this feedback the Council decided that it would no longer apply used oil as a dust suppressant on most of the district's unsealed roads.
In making this decision, the Council provided additional funding in its 'ottasealing' programme to enable all roads that met the oiling policy to receive this alternative dust suppressant treatment. This treatment last for up to seven years and works like a light seal.
The 'no-oiling' policy has two exceptions. First, council will oil sections of the road, such as on approaches to bridges and where dust may create a road safety concern.
