Planning Your Event
If you are holding an event in a public space in the Queenstown Lakes District, you should complete an Event Information Form. You may also need to apply for other permits and consents depending on the size and type of event you are holding.
We have a wide variety of event services available for use including event ticketing, equipment and venue hire, and banner advertising spaces.

Promote Your Event
Event Calendar Criteria
- All events must be open to the public to attend, participate or spectate.
- Markets must reoccur on a regular basis.
- Events must take place in the Queenstown Lakes District area.
- Garage sales, car-boot sales or anything deemed similar will not be listed as events on this calendar.
- Entertainment featuring at bars and restaurants will not be listed as events on this calendar.
QLDC reserves the right to use their discretion when deciding to list an event on the site. All submissions will be checked and published by the Events Office. This may take three to four working days, so please be aware you won't see your listing appear immediately. Remember to include a website link, image and as much detail as possible.
Depending on the type of event you’re having, you may require a permit or licence for alcohol, fire, signs, amusement devices, gaming and hazardous substances. If you have an enquiry regarding any of these you can contact the Events Office on 03 441 0499 or email email@example.com.
Road Closures for Events
Temporary road closures for events considered under the Local Government Act have a limit of 31 days per calendar year. Any requested closures beyond this amount are considered under the Transport Vehicular Traffic Road Closure Regulations 1965, and have a longer notification period.

As a reminder, please submit Temporary Road Closure applications – together with Traffic Management Plans – as early as possible.
A temporary event sign means any sign established for the purpose of advertising or announcing a single forthcoming temporary event, function or occurrence including carnivals, fairs, galas, market days, meetings, exhibitions, parades, rallies, filming, sporting and cultural events, concerts, shows, musical and theatrical festivals and entertainment; but does not include electioneering signs, real estate signs, construction signs, a land development sign, off-site sign or temporary sale sign.
Signage rules for temporary events:
a) Established no more than two months prior to the date of the event;
b) Have an area no greater than 2m², or 3m² if a Banner;
c) Are removed within 24 hours of completion of the event;
d) Are limited to two signs fronting any State Highway and two signs fronting other roads;
e) Must be for the purpose of advertising or announcing a single forthcoming temporary event;
f) Are located on the site that the event is to be held on; and
g) Are not located within the road reserve.

We manage a range of banner and event signage opportunities within the Lakes District using the street lighting infrastructure and purpose built Council controlled structures for the promotion of events. Bookings are essential for all flag and banner sites. Our sites include:

Permission to Film in Queenstown Lakes District
Film Otago Southland is responsible for facilitating and permitting the operations of filming in the Queenstown Lakes District.

You should also consider developing a waste management plan if your event includes high waste content such as leaflet material, food stalls, giveaways, large scale catering or if your event is in an environmentally/culturally sensitive area.

Concerts & Shows
If you're looking to bring a concert or show to Queenstown, Arrowtown or Wanaka, then look no further than one of our venues. We manage some of the most popular venues in the region, whether it's a local theatre performance, an indoor concert for 3,500 or an outdoor music festival for tens of thousands. We can help steer you in the right direction with everything you need from ticketing services to top notch local photographers and writers that will help you get the word out to the locals. We can also provide you with advice on marketing your event and help advertise your event through our own marketing channels. Examples of previous events are Flight of the Conchords, Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Fat Freddy’s Drop and The Black Seeds.

With its stunning scenery and impressive range of activities, the Southern Lakes is the ideal location for your next conference or incentive event. We have a variety of venues from intimate to expansive and your delegates and guests will delight in everything this region has to offer from adrenaline activities to a vast array of dining and relaxation options. The ANZA Workshop (Australia New Zealand Education Agents), Principals Conference and New Zealand Dairy Awards recently took place at the Queenstown Events Centre around 600 delegates in attendance, with the latter including a black tie gala dinner awards function.

Our events team is experienced in assisting with the delivery of regional, national and international trade shows and exhibitions from intimate to expansive productions and everything in between. Examples of previous trade shows include Queenstown Auto Extravaganza, and Queenstown Home Shows which attracts up to 6,000 people over three days each year. Our largest trade shows include TRENZ 2011 and 2012 (Tourism Industry Rendezvous New Zealand) with 1,200 delegates in attendance.
