Hazardous Waste Amnesty

The Hazardous Waste Amnesty is an annual event that allows residents and businesses in the Queenstown Lakes District to drop off their hazardous waste for safe recycling and disposal.

Hazardous waste, which includes materials such as glues, paints, cleaners, chemicals, old and new fertilisers, fats and oils, fluorescent light bulbs, circuit boards, and aerosols and lighters, needs to be disposed of carefully in order not to affect the health of people or the environment.

The last hazardous waste amnesty in 2012 saw approximately 3,697 kg of hazardous waste diverted from landfill.

The next amnesty will take place at the following times and locations:

Frankton Transfer Station - 10am to 4pm on Friday 25 October and 10am to 4pm on Saturday 26 October

Wanaka Transfer Station – 11.30am to 3.30pm on Sunday 27 October and 11.30am to 3.30pm on Monday 28 October

Residents and businesses with small amounts of household hazardous waste may dispose of it free of charge. There will be a charge for amounts in excess of 50 kilos ($10 per kilo). Transpacific Industrial Solutions will ensure that all materials collected are processed and disposed of safely
