Rubbish
Rubbish Bags
Council approved rubbish bags can be purchased from supermarkets, petrol stations and Council offices for $2 each.
Disposing of your rubbish
Rubbish can be dropped off at transfer stations in both Queenstown and Wanaka, although the Council encourages the community to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible.
Please drop your rubbish off at:
Queenstown Transfer Station
Frankton end of Glenda Drive, Frankton Industrial Estate.
Opening hours 8am – 5pm, 7 days a week. Closed on Christmas Day, New Years Day, Good Friday and the morning of ANZAC day.

Opening hours 11.30am – 3.30pm, 7 days a week. Closed on Christmas Day, New Years Day, Good Friday and the morning of ANZAC day.

Cost to dispose of rubbish at the Transfer Station
Charges include GST:
• Cars / small loads - $13
• Van / Ute / Trailer / Large Vehicle (lighter than 200kg) - $26
• Per Tonne - $130
• Blue Council approved rubbish bags - $2
Recycling
The following materials are recyclable in the Queenstown Lakes District:
• Plastics 1-7. Washed and lids off.
• Tins and aluminium cans. Washed.
• Empty aerosol cans. Washed
• Clean aluminium foil
• Glass bottles and jars. Washed with the lids off (the lids can also go in the recycling container)
• Paper and small cardboard items. For example office paper, magazines, newspaper, egg cartons, cereal boxes.
• Larger cardboard items. Please flatten, bundle and tie up, and place next to your bin.

The Wakatipu Recycling Centre accepts:
• all of the above materials
• used oil and batteries (only engine oil and machinery lubricating oil will be accepted. No fuel including paraffin, diesel or petrol, or cooking oil will be accepted. (Please ask for assistance if you are dropping off oil)
Wanaka Wastebusters Recycling Centre

Wanaka Wastebusters accepts all of the above materials and also runs a ‘re-use’ shop for second hand goods such as furniture and electrical items.
Dump Stations
Please be responsible when emptying your motor home toilet and waste water - always use a designated dump station. It’s better for New Zealand's environment and our health. Local dump stations are listed below or look out for the blue symbol:

Litter and Illegal Dumping
Did you know that you can be fined $100 for dropping rubbish in a public area or leaving your rubbish out on the kerb on the wrong day or place?
Litter and illegal dumping costs a the Council, and therefore the community, a lot of additional money every year.
