Official Information (LGOIMA)
Any person can make a request for information held by the Council. This page explains how to make a request and outlines when the Council might withhold the information.
How to make an official information request
Please put your request in writing and be really specific about the information you require.

Records Manager, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Private Bag 50072, Queenstown 9348 or email Barbara.East@qldc.govt.nz.
The Council may transfer requests to other organisations if it is believed they hold the relevant information. The Council will notify you if your request has been transferred.
How long will it take?
Requests are processed within 20 working days. If your request is more urgent, you will need to explain why. There are some circumstances where the timeframe could be extended or reduced.
How much will it cost?
The Council may charge for official information requests under its official information charging policy. Generally the first hour of research is free.
When information is likely to be withheld
Requests for official information are governed by the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA) and the Privacy Act 1993. These Acts aim to balance public interest and preservation of personal privacy.
Information may be withheld if it would:
- Endanger the safety of any person.
- Prejudice maintenance of the law.
- Compromise the privacy of any person.
- Reveal confidential or commercially sensitive information.
- Cause offence to tikanga Māori or would disclose the location of waahi tapu.
- Prejudice public health or safety.
- Compromise legal professional privilege.
- Disadvantage the local authority while carrying out negotiations or commercial activities.
- Allow information to be used for improper gain or advantage.
