Frankton water main

Hundreds of Frankton and Kelvin Height properties awoke without water on Saturday morning after a water main burst on Robertson Street.

The 200mm main, which burst at the end of Robertson Road, near the Kawarau Falls Bridge sent a stream of water out onto the state highway.

“Residents said they heard a bang and then a noise like a waterfall at around 8.15am,” Queenstown Lakes District Council water services manager Garry McGraw said.

The water scoured a bank out and sent debris approximately 300 metres down the road towards the bridge.

“Our first priority was to isolate the main and get water restored to the hospital, the airport and Remarkables Park,” Mr McGraw said.

Water was able to be restored to most properties at approximately 11am, however permanent repairs continued to affect a handful of homes through until 6pm.

Traffic was disrupted for a short time to allow clearance of the dirt and debris.

“We cannot be sure of the cause of the outage at this stage but we will continue to investigate,” Mr McGraw said.
