Save money and save the environment by using cloth nappies for your baby.

The Happy Nappy Scheme launched on Tuesday 1 November. As of Jan 2012 all the available Happy Nappy packs had been distributed. Council will be evaluating the success of the scheme later this year with a view to repeating it if there's a need.

Why cloth nappies?

Better for the environment

More than 6 tonnes of disposable nappies go to the Victoria Flats landfill very week. That takes up a lot of space. Here are some other things to think about.
If a baby wears disposables full time for two and a half years, the result is nearly two tonnes of nappies
A disposable nappy takes around 550 years to break down in landfill
While it’s decomposing, it’s emitting methane into the air, contributing to the Greenhouse Effect
It takes one cup of crude oil to make the plastic for each disposable nappy
More than a million trees are chopped down every year to make the disposable nappies for New Zealand

Better for your wallet

It’s true - in the long term, modern cloth nappies are much cheaper to use.
Depending on your choice of products and washing and
drying methods, you can save a lot of money using modern cloth
nappies. Studies have shown that using cloth nappies for one child over a two and a half year period can save you up to $5000.

No hassle

If you use cloth nappies just some of the time, it will make a difference to our landfill and the environment. The more often you use cloth nappies, the bigger the difference you'll make.
