Procurement process begins for Frankton Campground commercial lease

Jul 19, 2019

Following the adoption of the Responsible Camping Strategy in October 2018, plans are underway to redevelop the Frankton Campground at Yewlett Crescent into a ‘camping only’ facility by the summer of 2020/21.

As part of this, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has released a request for proposal (RFP) for the new 20-year commercial lease of the Frankton Campground.

QLDC Chief Executive Mike Theelen advised the successful applicant will take over the campground lease from the 1 May 2020 and will play a key role in the redevelopment of the site to a camping only facility.

“This commercial lease brings the opportunity to revitalise the site and provide much needed camping space for holiday makers to our district. We expect this will be an attractive opportunity for potential lessees based on its prime lakefront location,” said Mr Theelen.

“We’re looking fora lessee, with vast experience in the development and running of a successful recreational camping or accommodation business,” said QLDC General Manager Community Services Thunes Cloete.

Following the procurement process, the transition phase at the campground will begin in order to reopen the developed site by November 2020.

“There are a number of tenants who currently live in a permanent and semi-permanent basis at the site, so we appreciate this transition to a camping only site may be difficult for some. Because of this, we have been working closely with the current campground managers to communicate the changes and key dates. In September there will also be a drop-in session to connect tenants with rental accommodation providers and to ask any questions about the project,” said Dr Cloete.

“Every transition has its challenges but the redeveloped campground will be a great asset not only to Frankton and the wider Queenstown-Wakatipu community, but also our domestic and international holidaymakers,” added Mr Theelen.

The RFP will be open for applications from today (19 July 2019) until 4.00pm on 16 September 2019 via the GETS portal.
