Moonlight Track Closure

Aug 5, 2009

The Moonlight Track, near Queenstown will be closed overnight tonight due to ongoing work to stabilise a section of the road.

“The section of road above McChesney Road will need to be closed tonight for safety reasons. We have been working on it today but quite a large section of rock above the road remains unstable,” Queenstown Lakes District Council roading manager Ian Marshall said.

The closure would affect nine properties but arrangements had been made with those residents, able to be contacted, to allow for safe travel to and from their homes.

“The track is very narrow and we would estimate the total area of rock at about 90-100 tonnes. At this stage we have been able to remove about half the rock,’ Mr Marshall said.

The rock had been affected by recent heavy rain and thawing.

“Unfortunately we are dealing with an alpine setting and at this time of year it is not uncommon to have to stabilise areas of rock,” Mr Marshall said.

The Council requested that recreational track users remained out of the area until Friday.

“We hope to have the road open and operating normally from tomorrow afternoon,” Mr Marshall said.
