New Rubbish and Recycling Service

Your new Rubbish and Recycling collection service has started.

We have delivered almost 54,000 bins across the district and the final few hundred will be delivered over the coming days.   Once that is complete, the contractors will start delivering the bins that have been missed or to newly built properties only recently eligible for kerbside collection.

The team is working hard to ensure you receive the new bins ahead of your collection day.  If you are one of the few that don’t receive the bins in time, we will make blue bags available to ensure your service can continue.  If possible, we ask that you store your recycling until you receive the new bins, or drop it at the transfer station.

For those who have their bins and are ready to roll, the first collection in Wakatipu will be Glass (blue bin) and rubbish (red bin).  For Upper Clutha folk, the first collection is mixed recycling (yellow bin) and rubbish (red bin).  You can sign up for collection reminders at http://reminders.saveourstuff.co.nz/

The journey towards zero waste

As a Council and a community we must act now and work towards a zero waste future. The new district-wide contract for solid waste reflects the collective approach needed, and is a strong collaboration between Waste Management New Zealand and nationally-recognised sustainability leaders, Wastebusters.

For many of us the service will be a big change. It’s an opportunity to consciously choose to make less rubbish and recycle responsibly.

As we embark on our journey we must also recognise that people are travelling at different speeds – there are many future-facing members of our community already making significant steps towards zero waste.  You are leading by example and we ask that you help us to support our wider community as we introduce the district-wide change.  The zero waste journey is one we all need to take together.
