Pest Control

Here the Council can help if you are having trouble with bees, wasps, rabbits, possums, goats or wandering stock.

Goats wandering on roads or Council land

QLDC will investigate reports of feral goats on council land and roads. Feral Goats are wild animals and are not a noxious pest. QLDC will carry out goat culls in areas where all land owners are involved but will not do one off control. The council is not responsible for goats on private land.

Rabbits and Possums on Council land

Please call us on 03 441 0499 (Queenstown) or 03 443 0024 (Wanaka). We will investigate the request and if required organise a control operation.

Individuals may contact the Council and apply for a permit to lay traps on Council land. There are a lot of rules and regulations around this to ensure public safety. Laying traps on Council land without permission is illegal and dangerous.

Rabbits, Possums and stoats on any other land

Please contact Otago Regional Council for help.

Stock on public roads

If you come across stock wandering on public roads, please call us on 03 441 0499 (Queenstown) or 03 443 0024 (Wanaka). We will arrange for an Animal Control Officer to get them to safety.

Wasps & Wasp Traps

For Council property, parks and reserves please call us on 03 441 0499 (Queenstown) or 03 443 0024 (Wanaka). We will send a Contractor to have them removed.

For Wasp Traps, QLDC currently has 100 Wasp Dome Traps subsidised and for sale at $15 each. These are available on a first come, first serve basis and the traps are both reusable and highly effective with capacity to hold hundreds of wasps.

You can see what the traps look like by clicking here.

Individuals will need to make their own Lure Recipe to place in the trap, which can be done using the following ingredients:

  • 250ml water
  • ¼ cup of Raro ( has to be a bright colour)
  • 2Tbs sugar
  • 4Tbs vinegar

Mixed together and put in trap.

On private land:

You can purchase various products to poison wasps from the following places:

• The Shotover Garden Centre (Queenstown) phone 03 442 2082.
• Mitre 10 Queenstown phone 03 442 2442.
• The Wanaka Garden Centre phone 03 443 7846.
• Mitre 10 Wanaka phone 03 443 9137.

How to use wasp poison

Poison is supplied in a sachet (good for one average sized nest). Please ensure you wear gloves and a mask when handling the poison.

The best way to use the powder is to pour it into the hole of the nest in the evening when the wasps go to sleep. Or try placing the poison somewhere that the wasps must walk over it. This means that they will carry the poison to the nest themselves.

Feral cats

Feral cats on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. Contact your local vet for assistance – they may be able to lend you a trap.
