Green and Food Waste Facilities
The Council is committed to diverting organic waste from the Victoria Flats Landfill. Find out about your options for disposing of green waste in the Queenstown Lakes District.
Council is working on a solution for organic waste for the district. In the meantime, green waste can be taken to:
- Queenstown and Wanaka Transfer Stations
What type of green waste is accepted?
Tree branches up to 400mm in diameter and small tree stumps. This waste is then chipped and reused in the district on parks and reserves.
$70 per tonne. More information on charges can be found here.
What is not accepted?
Broom, gorse, flax, cabbage trees, grasses, leaves, weeds, sawdust, timber off-cuts, crates, wood packaging or gib board will not be accepted. These items will be charged as rubbish and disposed of at the landfill, with charges for this found here.
Opening hours 8am – 5pm, 7 days a week.
The Transfer Station is closed on Christmas Day, New Years Day, Good Friday and until 12noon on ANZAC day.

Wanaka Greenwaste and Landscaping Supplies takes all manner of greenwaste, from tree and hedge clippings to weeds and general garden waste. Please keep all cabbage tree, flax and grass clippings separated.
Also available onsite: Mulch, compost, bark and most landscaping supplies. Courtesy trailer available.
Community Run Facilities
Glenorchy, Kingston, Lake Hawea, Luggate and Makarora all have greenwaste facilities that are community run.
