Coloured sand products recalled

As per guidelines released by Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE), a range of coloured sand products have been recalled after testing positive for asbestos. Below, we’ve summarised the products identified, key advice for consumers, and how to dispose of these products safely. Please do not dispose of these products in your regular wheelie bins.

Products identified

  • EC Rainbow Sand (1.3kg) – previously recalled

  • Creatistics Coloured Sand (1kg) – previously recalled

  • Four magic sand products sold at Kmart NZ, including:

  • 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set (Batch no: 42975724)

  • Blue Magic Sand (Batch no: 42304364)

  • Green Magic Sand (Batch no: 432919650)

  • Pink Magic Sand (Batch no: 42304371)

Key advice for consumers

  • Stop using these products immediately.

  • Do not let children touch or play with the sand.

  • Place the product within a sealed container – detailed below as part of how to dispose of these products safely.

How to dispose of these products safely

  • These products can be brought to transfer stations in the Queenstown Lakes District for safe disposal, free of charge, until the end of November. Appointments must be made first by calling WM on 03 341 2092.

  • To dispose of these products safely, they must be contained in heavy duty polythene bags, double bagged, and sealed. To seal properly, please twist the top of each bag tightly, fold the necks over (a ‘gooseneck twist’), and seal with adhensive tape so the contents are fully enclosed.

  • Bags must be clearly labelled with “Asbestos-Contaminated Material” before being disposed.

  • If you need bags, they can be collected from our transfer stations.
