- Construction to begin on new roundabout at Capell Avenue and Domain Road intersection in Hāwea
Friday, 17 November 2023
Construction to begin on new roundabout at Capell Avenue and Domain Road intersection in Hāwea
Construction of a roundabout will begin next week, as part of a continuing programme of works between QLDC and Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Capell Avenue and Domain Road in Hāwea will begin next week, as part of a continuing programme of works between Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Authority to improve safety for road users in the area.
QLDC General Manager Property & Infrastructure, Tony Avery shared that once complete, the new roundabout would improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection and include a new pedestrian refuge crossing.
“Following on from the recent upgrade of the intersection at Aubrey Road and Anderson Road in Wānaka, the new roundabout at Capell Avenue and Domain Road is another opportunity to deliver simple but effective solutions for the safety of all road users in the Upper Clutha,” said Mr Avery.
Work is expected to begin at the intersection of Capell Avenue and Domain Road on Monday 20 November, and crews will be onsite between 7.00am and 6.00pm from Monday to Friday, with some work required Saturdays.
To allow for the safe construction of the roundabout, Domain Road will be closed to traffic between Capell Avenue and Noema Terrace through to Friday 8 December, followed by temporary traffic management at the intersection until Thursday 22 December.
Crews will then return to site on Tuesday 9 January 2024 and require temporary traffic management once more, with the roundabout expected to be completed by late March.
“The closure to Domain Road and other traffic management options are likely to cause some inconvenience, but once complete, I’m confident the new roundabout here will greatly improve what is currently quite a confusing intersection for all users to navigate,” said Mr Avery.
“Pedestrian and emergency access will be maintained at all times through the worksite, and a detour will be in place using Noema Terrace and Bodkin Street.”
These road safety improvements are partially funded by Waka Kotahi as part of New Zealand’s national road safety strategy.
The contract for this work was awarded to HEB Construction.
