The Food Act 2014 enables Council to establish fees to recover the direct and indirect costs of registration, verification, compliance, and monitoring activities for Environmental Health services. The following charges are applicable to all food businesses that are required to be registered in our district, starting from 1 July 2024.

Food Business Levy
Central government introduced the Food Business Levy in 2024.
The levy is an annual charge that comes into effect on 1 July 2025. It applies to all food businesses.
As your registration authority, we will:
- collect the levy on behalf of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)
- transfer the levy directly to MPI.
If you do not pay the levy on time, we will forward your debt to the MPI. The MPI may also apply penalties including interest charges.
How we will charge the Food Business Levy
We will include the levy when you register a new food business,
Initial registration will include:
- the council's registration fee
- the annual Food Business Levy
- the $12.65 Food Business Levy collection fee.
Annual Levy Fee
The annual levy fee will be invoiced each year and will include the
- the annual Food Business Levy
- the $12.65 Food Business Levy collection fee.
If you run a food business with multi-site registration, the way we apply the levy will depend on the type of registration.
Food Business Levy Fees
The levy will be phased over three years.

Food Operator Verification Fees
These fees include preparation, travel, onsite auditing, reporting, and administration time. If the activity exceeds the limitation hours set below, there will be an extra charge applied.
