Councillor Matt Wong
Councillor Matt Wong is elected to the Queenstown-Whakatipu Ward. You can learn more about Councillor Wong and find his contact details below.
About Councillor Wong
I have been elected councillor because people believe in us to represent their community, deliver pragmatic governance, and show strong leadership. These three areas are my focus for the next triennium as your councillor. While we work towards improving our district now, I will be looking out for the next generation to help shape their future. Of course, there is a significant focus on the next 1-3 years, but the districts future aspirations for the next 10-20 years and beyond is just as critically important.
The opportunity to represent the community and place a hand on the wheel to help steer our direction as a district is a privilege. We have experienced significant disruption and will be continually challenged by numerous internal and external forces influencing the quality of life. While it is extremely challenging times for our district, our country, and globally, disruption creates opportunity, and we should understand the only constant in life is change and we can all be the change maker.
As a 20-year local I have become embedded into the fabric of the community. I'm a husband and father to two primary aged kids, own and operate a multi award-winning tourism business, board member of Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce, and Trustee of The Lightfoot Initiative. I am an advisory for Regenerative Tourism, Mental Health, Active Transport, and Inclusive/Accessible travel. With an MSc in Ecology and previous career in conservation, I'm excited about Regenerative Tourism and its positive impact on our district. Particularly I will focus innovation to create circular economies that enhance the districts environment, culture, and communities, as well as economic diversity and vitality.
