Lake Street Update: 25 September 2023
Following on from our notification last week we wanted to update you with the construction progress on Man Street/Lake Street.

Following on from our notification last week we wanted to update you with the construction progress on Man Street/Lake Street.
Please see the table below outlining what we completed last week, and what we have coming up this week.
As a reminder, the work started on 28 August and is expected to be complete by 30 October.
Completed last week |
Placement of remaining gravel from the Lakeview site to Hay Street Final trim and compaction of the road gravel basecourse Installation of membrane chipseal from Lakeview site towards Hay Street The first layer of structural asphalt (Fri 22 Sept) - Delayed due to weather |
This week (22 – 29 September) |
Paving layers of structural asphalt – note that this activity has temperature and moisture restrictions and is therefore weather dependent Begin exposing and setting manhole lids before the final layer of asphalt is installed |
As mentioned in our update last week we communicated we would get back to you on the community suggestions we received that relate directly to Waka Kotahi. Please find an update on this below:
-
Can we remove the right turn into Rees Street from Shotover Street?
The right turn will be removed for the duration of the Lake Street closure from Tuesday 26 September, please follow the traffic and pedestrian signs and take extra care at all times. -
Can the green walking man at the intersection of Shotover and Duke Street be shorter?
The solid green walk display is only six seconds, with a flashing green walk completion display of 12 seconds. The display is as short as we can make the overall pedestrian phase while keeping it practical and safe. -
Is the green light sequencing at the Shotover and Duke intersection linked to the lights at Stanley Street?
No, they are not currently because the roundabout at Shotover/Camp and the pedestrian crossings mean the traffic signals cannot practically be co-ordinated. Initially options to fund installing traffic signals at the Shotover/Camp intersection also are being assessed. This would make that coordination possible.
Mid-block pedestrian crossing demand will always exist on Shotover Street, but if we can add signals at Shotover/Camp we can go through the technical and safety process to take out the zebra crossings to better coordinate the traffic on Shotover Street as a whole.
-
Can we place traffic management staff at the zebra crossings past the Shotover/Duke intersection to help with traffic flow when the light turns green?
No, not immediately, a risk assessment is to be carried out for this option due to concerns for pedestrian safety. We are assessing this option. -
The zebra crossing before the roundabout on Shotover Street has an island in the road, can we black out the stripes on the road?
No, not immediately, a risk assessment is to be carried out for this option due to concerns for pedestrian safety. We are assessing this option.
From our last correspondence we communicated that the queries we received were related to the overall movement along SH6A which is outside of the scope of work for the Alliance. We said we would provide a contact email for the community, so if you would like to get in touch going forward please email any queries to:
customer@aspiringhighways.co.nz
As always, our top priority is the safety of all residents and commuters, so we kindly ask for you to please follow the traffic and pedestrian signs and take extra care at all times.
If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with QLDC customer services on 03 441 0499 or email:
services@qldc.govt.nz.
