What we're currently working on
The current focus is to make sure the energy upgrades are the right long‑term fit for each facility. This includes:
confirming which proven energy solutions are available and suitable for use in New Zealand,
testing performance, maintenance and whole‑of‑life implications for each site, and
aligning energy upgrades with wider facility use and projects to minimise potential disruption to users.
Each site is different, which means a tailored approach is required rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all solution.
What's coming next
Following the current assessment work, the next phase involves working through design and approval processes, with careful attention to timing and coordination - particularly for the larger Alpine Aqualand and Wānaka Recreation Centre upgrades.
Subject to Council approval and confirmation through these stages, the upgrades are expected to be delivered in sequence, starting with Arrowtown Memorial Pool.
Updates will continue to be shared through this page and via Council’s email subscriber list as work progresses.
Why are we doing this?
The energy upgrades are expected to deliver long term benefits for the community and ratepayers by supporting system resilience and long term performance, reducing operating costs, and lowering emissions over time.
Early analysis suggests the programme could deliver operating cost savings of around $760,000 per year and reduce emissions by up to 75%, subject to final design, consenting and confirmation.
Once design and approvals are completed (including Council approval), the upgrades are expected to be delivered in sequence, starting with Arrowtown Memorial Pool.
