Three new murals emerging on Stanley Street
The murals are a collaboration between the Queenstown Arts Centre and Kā Huanui a Tāhuna.
If you’re in Queenstown, take a stroll along Stanley Street to see the first of three new murals emerging. The murals are a collaboration between the Queenstown Arts Centre and Kā Huanui a Tāhuna, the alliance established by QLDC and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency to deliver a number of infrastructure upgrades across Queenstown.
Nick Lowry, one of the three artists selected to complete a mural on a section of the wall surrounding the site compound for Stage 1 of the town centre arterial road, is the first to get underway. His striking image of a tui and kowhai flowers is at the corner of Stanley Street and Ballarat Street.
“I chose the tui for a number of reasons. The playful nature of the tui reflects the playful and adventurous spirit of the Queenstown community,” says Nick. “The kowhai and tui jointly represent the integration of nature and urban life.”
In a generous gesture, Nick is extending his mural around the corner onto Ballarat Street, painting the second area while waiting for paint on the main mural to dry. “It’s a privilege to be selected for this project”, says Nick. “The opportunity to add to the vibrancy of an energetic and growing town centre is exciting.”
The other two artists selected are Koryu Aoshima and Ronnie Baker. Koryu will begin painting his section of the wall in December and Ronnie will be underway in the middle of January.
