Rabbit control operations to target locations in Wānaka and Albert Town

This operation will start any time from 19 July 2021 and is weather dependent

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is planning to undertake rabbit control this winter in a number of locations throughout Wānaka and Albert Town, working with Otago Regional Council (ORC), the Department of Conservation (DOC), Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and private land owners in the process.

Toxic Pindone carrot baits will be placed on the ground within the following locations:

  • Near the southern edge of the Clutha River by Albert Town, including Templeton Park and the Cardrona River Mouth

  • North of the Albert Town Bridge (Albert Town Reserve)

  • Near the Outlet (Clutha River Reserve), and

  • On land near Waterfall Creek (Damper Bay Lakeside Recreation Reserve).

This operation is being planned in conjunction with adjoining landowners, in order to comply with the Otago Regional Council's Pest Management Plan.

Things to note about the rabbit control operation:

  • This operation will start any time from 19 July 2021. The timing of this operation is weather dependent

  • The operation is expected to require up to three toxic applications, each estimated to be one week apart. Bait and toxin will be laid over a period of six weeks, but caution is advised until all signage has been removed

  • It is strongly advised not to enter any of these areas during the application of bait. Some walking tracks and areas will be closed for the duration of bait sowing and will be reopened once complete. If people do enter these sites, please exercise caution during the application of bait

  • Tracks and access points near rabbit control operation locations will be clearly signposted

  • People should avoid touching the baits or removing carcasses from a targeted area

  • If near an area in which the rabbit control operation is underway, dog owners should keep their dogs under close control or on a leash

Local schools, vets, medical centres and childcare centres have been notified of the operation.

Preston Pest Control has been contracted to undertake the rabbit control operation.
