Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has published a dashboard bringing together local wellbeing insights from a range of data sources. As the first version, the Council would like to hear from organisations, businesses and individuals about how useful it is and what can be done to improve it.

This first version is like a ‘fact file’ that can be consulted by anyone looking to inform decision-making that supports positive community wellbeing outcomes.

The importance of wellbeing data was identified as a key component in QLDC’s Ten Year Plan (2021 – 2031) Performance Framework. This follows from the Government updating the Local Government Act in 2019 to affirm local government’s purpose to promote community wellbeing.

While the dashboard has been designed to incorporate the four aspects of wellbeing (social, economic, environmental and cultural), it is structured around QLDC’s Vision Beyond 2050 eight vision statements and supporting definitions of what ‘good’ wellbeing could look like for each of these.

For example, if you look at the dashboard data sitting under the vision statement for Zero carbon communities | Our transport system is low-emission and well connected, you can easily see that our biggest emissions culprits are from on-road transportation, closely followed by aviation. Meanwhile, only 20% of residents stated that public transport meets their needs in 2021. This data at a high level can help direct focus with a wellbeing lens.

The Council welcomes feedback over the coming year, which will inform next steps for the dashboard. To see the dashboard and provide feedback, please visit: https://www.qldc.govt.nz/wellbeing-dashboard
