Schools to pool active travel route
Construction of Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the Schools to Pool active travel route is now underway.
Quick links
About the project
Active travel is an integral part of providing an accessible and safe transport network in Wānaka.
Our proposed Schools to Pool footpath upgrades will create and encourage the use of shared, safer spaces for pedestrians, cyclists and micro mobility users. Once complete, the three-metre-wide shared pathway will connect Holy Family Catholic School, Wanaka Primary School, and Mount Aspiring College with Wānaka Recreation Centre providing a safe, 4.5km cross-town link.
Construction of the pathway will be broken up into four stages, with the first stage of installing signalised pedestrian crossings on Aubrey Road and Ballantyne Road already completed.
The Schools to Pool route will make small, quick and effective changes to our streets and the way they’re used, making it easier to embrace cycling or walking as a means of travel and creating a more sustainable environment to live, work, and play in Wānaka.
More safe, well-designed and low-carbon travel options available means more people choosing to walk and cycle in town, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a better future.
This route is just one part of a range of upgrades that will contribute to walkable neighbourhoods and safer, greener, and healthier school travel in and around Wānaka.
This project is funded by the Transport Choices package, part of the Waka Kotahi Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF) programme, which aims to demonstrate what’s possible for communities nationwide by quickly providing people with healthier, more affordable, and safer transport choices that are good for us, and for the environment.
What's the latest?
Monday 6 November 2023
Construction on Stage 2 of the Schools to Pool active travel route is now underway.
Construction on Stage 3 of the Schools to Pool active travel route started on Tuesday 26 September.
Stages of work
-
Construction of signalised pedestrian crossings on Ballantyne Road and Aubrey Road was completed on Wednesday 21 June 2023.
Close -
Construction of shared pathway from Kelly’s Flat through Wanaka Primary School, connecting with Mount Aspiring College and running to Lismore Park. A raised safety platform and a pedestrian refuge island will be installed on Plantation Road outside Mount Aspiring College.
Work is now underway on a section of the path running along the edge of Kelly's Flat and is due to be complete on Friday 15 December 2023.
Work on the remaining sections of the Stage 2 active travel route will be largely completed during school holidays between Monday 18 December 2023 and Monday 29 January 2024.
Close -
Work is now underway to construct a shared pathway from Plantation Road, running through Lismore Park to Hedditch Street near its intersection with Little Street. A raised safety platform will be installed on Hedditch Street and Plantation Road.
A section of Hedditch Street in Wānaka will be temporarily closed from Monday 13 November through to Friday 24 November, to allow for construction of a speed table and adjoining footpaths as part of the Schools to Pool active travel route. Stop/Go will then be required from Monday 27 November through to Friday 8 December between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm.
Resident access will be maintained at all times and available from State Highway 84 (Wānaka-Luggate Highway), and we apologise for any disruption caused by this work.
Work on Stage 3 of the active travel route is expected to be complete by early December 2023.
Close -
Stage 4 of the Schools to Pool route will cross State Highway 84 before running along Ballantyne Road and into Three Parks, where the pathway will connect with Wānaka Recreation Centre and Te Kura O Take Kārara Primary School.
Final designs for Stage 4 will be shared soon.
Close -
Starting on Friday 6 October, work will begin to construct four raised safety platforms on Rata Street as part of the Schools to Pool project, with upgrades to Rata Street's intersection with Aubrey Road to follow later in the year.
Stop/go will be operating on Rata Street from Friday 6 October through to Friday 11 November. During this time, residential traffic from Kowhai Drive will need to exit the area using Hunter Crescent. Access into Kowhai Drive will be via Rata Street.
Stop/go will be required again from Wednesday 15 November through to Friday 8 December to complete the final raised safety platform near Hunter Crescent. During this time, residential traffic from Hunter Crescent will need to exit the area using Bay View Drive or Bremner Park Road. Residential traffic from Kamahi Street will need to exit the area using Makomako Road.
Upgrades to the intersection of Rata Street and Aubrey Road will begin in early 2024, with exact start dates to be confirmed with residents in advance.
Close
What to expect
As with any large construction project, some disruption is likely while work is underway to construct the Schools to Pool active travel route and improvements to Rata Street in Wānaka. Traffic management and temporary footpath closures in Kelly’s Flat and Lismore Park will be required to complete portions of the project.
There may also be additional truck movement into, out of and around construction sites.
All work within or near schools is scheduled to be completed during school holiday periods to help minimise potential disruption to students.
Construction timings
Work is underway on both Stage 2 and 3 of the Schools to Pool active travel route.
Stage 2:
Work on a section of the path running along the edge of Kelly's Flat is due to be complete on Friday 15 December 2023. Remaining sections of the Stage 2 active travel route will be largely completed during school holidays between Monday 18 December 2023 and Monday 29 January 2024.
Stage 3:
Crews are currently asphalting sections of the path in Lismore Park and on Lismore Street, and construction will soon begin on a speed table and adjoining footpaths at the intersection of Hedditch Street and Little Street. This work is expected to be completed by Friday 8 December.
Working with you
Maintaining access for residents and businesses living near construction of the Schools to Pool route is important to the delivery of this project, and we are committed to working closely with those affected by these works.
We’ll be in regular communication with affected residents and businesses, and well in advance of construction dates and developments they need to know about. If you live or operate a business along the proposed Schools to Pool route and have any concerns or questions about the construction, please get in touch:
