Queenstown Lakes Libraries launches Karawhiua Collection
The collection brings together a wide range of practical and creative tools designed to help people learn, create, fix, explore, and thrive.
Queenstown Lakes Libraries is excited to launch its new Karawhiua Collection this April. The collection brings together a wide range of practical and creative tools designed to help people learn, create, fix, explore, and thrive. Among the items available are stargazing kits and birdwatching packs, as well as home energy efficiency toolkits, stud finders, eReaders, DVD players, and robots for budding coders.
Queenstown Lakes District Library Services Manager Sue Gwilliam said the name Karawhiua captures the spirit of the initiative. “Karawhiua means ‘go for it, give it heaps, have a go’ – and that’s exactly what we want our community to feel when they borrow from this collection,” said Ms Gwilliam. “It’s about giving people the confidence and opportunity to try something new, whether that’s coding a robot, checking their home’s energy efficiency, or exploring the night sky.”
Ms Gwilliam said the collection is grounded in sustainability and equity. “With the rising cost of living, it’s not always realistic for households to purchase specialist tools or equipment they may only need occasionally. By sharing resources, we’re giving everyone an equal chance to learn, create, fix, and explore – without the financial pressure.”
She said the initiative reflects a wider shift in how libraries across the motu are evolving. “‘Library of Things’ collections are becoming increasingly common, and we’re proud to join other libraries in offering practical, creative, and educational tools that support wellbeing and everyday life.”
“Whether you want to test something out before buying, pick up a new hobby, fix something at home, or simply explore the world around you, this collection is an invitation to give it a go,” said Ms Gwilliam.
The Karawhiua Collection is available now with items able to be borrowed by permanent adult members of Queenstown Lakes Libraries. Visit your local library to see what you can borrow today.
