Commercial Services

Ngā whakaratonga tauhokohoko

We don't provide commercial rubbish and recycling collection services. If you have a business or your property is rated as commercial or accommodation, you'll need to organise your own commercial waste provider.

Commercial waste and recycling management in our district

As of Monday 20 November, commercial waste collection points in Queenstown and Arrowtown have closed.

These collection points were established as a way to assist businesses to manage their commercial waste and recycling.

Top tips for businesses

We recognise this is a big change for some businesses and that it may take some time to work through a plan for reducing and managing your waste. We’ve provided some top tips to help your business get started:

  • Get advice from Zero Waste champions like Wastebusters, Zero Waste Network NZ, Sustainable Queenstown, Sustainable Glenorchy and WasteMINZ.

  • Check out Wastebusters case studies to see what other businesses have done to reduce their waste

  • Talk to your colleagues about what they are doing, and what your industry could do.

  • Consider a waste audit with Wastebusters so you can take action on your organisation’s waste pain points.

  • Go back to basics and find out who is offering waste management services in your area.  Check out the 'commercial collection options' section below.

  • Stay connected - sign up to Wastebusters’ newsletter for waste minimisation information, events and workshops, as well as QLDC’s Climate Action newsletter

  • QLDC is committed to becoming a low-waste, low-emissions, circular economy.  These changes are aligned with this commitment along with our work to restore the environment and decarbonise the visitor economy, which is a key pillar of ‘Travel to a thriving future’, our district-wide Regenerative Tourism Plan.

They are also being made in response to ongoing complaints and feedback.

QLDC does not provide a rates-funded commercial collection service.  The collection points were established as a way to support businesses to manage their waste and recycling.

Unfortunately a growing number of businesses have been leaving waste and bins out on public land outside of the allocated areas and times and we have reached the point where the volume of waste has outgrown the capacity of the collection points.

    The images below illustrate this:

  • Council land, or the collection points are no longer be available as a place to store or manage commercial waste and recycling. This means businesses will need to store waste and recycling onsite and arrange an ‘on property’ service.

We know there are many businesses which already manage their own waste and recycling on site.  But for those which don’t, please take some time to consider a plan for the waste produced by your business.

As a local business owner, we know you take pride in our town being tidy, safe and welcoming for locals and visitors and we are committed to making positive changes to address the issues raised.

  • The following options are available for dealing with commercial rubbish and recycling:

    • You can ask your commercial waste provider for an ‘on property’ service, meaning the waste provider will collect waste and recycling from your premise directly, removing the need to leave waste bins or recycling out on the street.   There are contact details for local commercial waste providers below.

    • You can take your waste and recycling directly to QLDC’s waste facilities.

  • The QLDC Monitoring and Enforcement team will be monitoring waste and recycling processes to ensure all businesses are taking steps to comply with these changes.

Failure to comply with these changes after the collection points have been formally closed may result in enforcement action being taken, including possible infringement penalties and/or seizure of your bins.

  • This is an opportunity to review your businesses waste and recycling practices.

  • We are in the early stages of drafting a Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw for district.  This will set out local rules for a range of waste and recycling related matters, including managing commercial waste and recycling, illegal dumping in public litter bins, incorrect materials being placed in bins, leaving commercial/residential bins out for extended periods, event waste, construction and demolition waste, and waste minimisation.

We’re now inviting early feedback to help shape the draft Bylaw.  An online survey is available at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz.
