About the project
The existing Wānaka Refuse Transfer Station on the corner of Ballantyne and Riverbank Roads, beside Wastebusters, is facing capacity, health and safety challenges.
The existing layout does not maximise opportunities to divert waste from landfill or encourage behaviours that minimise waste. The facility requires a redesign, including layout reconfiguration and capacity upgrades, to improve the user experience and maximise waste diversion opportunities.
A suitable site has been identified on the adjacent land on Ballantyne Road, and detailed design work is underway for a new Refuse Transfer Station facility.
The upgraded facility will provide a safer and more efficient operation, improve compliance, increase capacity, and support improved waste minimisation and management across the Wānaka-Upper Clutha Ward.

Tonkin & Taylor have been appointed as the lead designer for the new facility, with The Building Intelligence Group appointed as Project Manager. A contractor for the construction phase has not yet been appointed.

Detailed design is well underway, with an interim detailed design issued in April 2026.
The project team is continuing the design phase, with detailed design expected to be completed in September 2026.
Resource consent applications are expected to be lodged shortly, in parallel with the ongoing design work.

Subject to project approvals, funding and procurement processes, construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027.
A construction tender is expected to go to market in October 2026, with construction anticipated to be completed by December 2027.
What to expect
The existing Wānaka Refuse Transfer Station will continue operating while the new facility is developed.
As the project progresses, we’ll provide more information about what to expect during construction, including any changes to access, site operations, or impacts on the surrounding area.
