About the project
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has employed the services of a professional contractor to complete construction of a new community playground at Merton Park Shotover Country.
Contractors will be working on the site from mid-October with Stage 1 construction expected to be completed late November 2026. The worksite will be confined to most of the reserve and there will be limited public access to the reserve during construction.
This playground is a community led project through the ‘Playground Sub-Committee’ of the Lake Hayes & Shotover Country Community Association.

QLDC engaged experienced professional landscape designer, Kamo Marsh Ltd, to develop the community concept plan.
Green by Nature and Playground Creations have been contracted to complete Stage 1 construction.

Playground delivery has been planned in stages to bring this exciting project to life. QLDC will deliver Stage 1, which includes the core playground elements to create an engaging and accessible space for the community.
In addition, a broader concept plan has been developed that outlines further enhancements—such as a mouse wheel, half-court basketball court, fitness area, and a BBQ space with park shelter.
While these additional features sit outside of Council’s current scope due to budget constraints, the community is actively working to bring them to fruition through fundraising efforts. There are opportunities for individuals, families, and local businesses to contribute towards these ‘wish list’ items.

The Lake Hayes Estate & Shotover Country Community Association continues to advocate for and support improvements within the community. Residents interested in contributing towards future playground stages, fundraising initiatives, or learning more about the project are encouraged to contact the Association directly:

Construction works are expected to commence in mid-October, with Stage 1 anticipated to be completed by late November 2026.
During this period, most of the reserve will be occupied by the worksite and public access will be restricted while construction is underway.
QLDC and its contractor will use safe and approved construction methods to minimise disruption to neighbours and protect existing trees, park assets and the surrounding environment.
Some short-term impacts may include:
Increased contractor and construction vehicle activity in the area
Temporary restrictions to access within Merton Park
Construction noise during normal working hours
Delivery of equipment and materials to site
