About the project
We are building a ‘peanut-shaped’ roundabout at Golf Course Road / Ballantyne Road intersection in Wānaka, which is effectively two small, connected roundabouts. This design fits within the existing intersection better than a larger conventional roundabout and encourages vehicles to travel through the intersection at slower speeds, improving safety for all road users.
Work will begin Monday 12 October 2026 and is expected to be completed in December 2026.
The map below shows the work area and detour.
Traffic impacts
To complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, the Golf Course Road/Ballantyne Road intersection will be closed to through traffic from Wednesday 14 October until December:
A detour will be in place. See the map overleaf for details.
Crews will be on site from Monday 12 October to establish traffic management and enabling works.
Please follow any signage and follow traffic management in the area.
Pedestrians will be able to move through the site under the direction of traffic management staff.
Cyclists will need to dismount and walk their bikes through the site under the direction of traffic management staff.
Timeframe
We know summer brings increased traffic and visitors to Wānaka, so we are aiming to have the roundabout substantially complete, and the intersection reopened ahead of the Christmas holiday period. Some work outside the carriageway may continue in the new year, and some night work may be required to help complete the project efficiently. As with any major construction work, dates may change due to weather, ground conditions or other unforeseen circumstances. Any changes will be communicated with further updates.
