Drones

Information on flying drones in the Queenstown Lakes District.

To fly a drone in New Zealand, you require consent to fly over people and property. QLDC isn’t currently giving approvals for drones to fly over our land/property unless the operator has a Part 102 certification.

If you have a Part 102 certification and want to use a drone for commercial filming on our land, you will need to apply for a Film Permit - please visit our Film Permits page to understand more.

If you have a Part 102 certification and want to use a drone for purposes other than commercial filming (e.g. surveying, emergency management) please contact our Sevices team and they will direct your enquiry accordingly:

It's important to note that CAA rules must be adhered to including rules restricting use of remote controlled aircraft (including drones) within controlled airspace and within 4km of aerodromes.

More information about drones is available via the Civil Aviation Authority here: Drones | aviation.govt.nz
