Wastewater spill enters Lake Whakatipu by Frankton Marina
Wastewater from a private property was discharged into the stormwater network
Update: Friday 14 March 2025
The cross connection issue on private property has been resolved. Water quality testing along parts of the Frankton Arm lakefront has returned results that are suitable for swimming, and warning signage has been removed in the area.
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has erected warning signage along parts of the Frankton Arm lakefront, after wastewater from a private property was discharged into Lake Whakatipu near Frankton Marina via the stormwater network.
The issue has been identified as the result of a cross connection, where wastewater from a property is incorrectly connected to stormwater pipes.
QLDC is working to notify the relevant property owner to prevent further discharges and put the correct connections in place.
Water quality testing is underway and signage will be removed once clear results are returned. In the meantime, people are recommended to avoid contact with lake water in the signposted area.
Iwi, Otago Regional Council (ORC), and Te Whatu Ora have been advised of the discharge.
