Arrowtown Memorial Pool to reduce emissions and be open for summer fun this season

Work is underway at Arrowtown Memorial Pool (AMP) to upgrade the old LPG boiler with a new electrified heat pump water heating system as part of energy upgrades at local aquatic facilities.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has chosen a simple, proven solution to heat AMP for the coming summer season. It will be fast to deliver and reduce emissions by up to 83%, contributing to QLDC’s Climate and Biodiversity Plan’s goals.

The upgrade follows a chilly 2025-2026 season, when AMP’s LPG boiler failed just a week before the pool was due to open, leaving swimmers with a colder than usual summer.

QLDC Strategic Projects Manager – Community Services, Simon Battrick, said the new system would be welcome news for swimmers and the wider community.

“Our commitment to the community last year was to have the next season heated and this is us delivering on that commitment.”

“It’s a great result for the community and for Council. It’s a better heating source that will deliver cost savings, have a better environmental outcome, and the community will get to enjoy a warm pool,” Mr Battrick said.

Arrowtown Memorial Pool is expected to open on the final weekend of November for the summer season. More details on the season ahead and the energy upgrade will be shared closer to the time.
