Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is giving sport and recreation in Wānaka a major boost with a new sprung timber sports floor. The new floor will cover both courts at Wānaka Recreation Centre (WRC).

The indoor courts at WRC will close from 1 December to 31 January while the new floor is delivered and installed over the existing synthetic surface. The indoor courts will reopen on 1 February 2027.

The sprung floor offers far better shock absorption, reducing stress on players’ joints and bodies and lowering the risk of injury. As a result, it’s hoped more people will be able to take part in community sport.

The new floor also helps WRC meet the expectations of local clubs and sporting organisations, enabling the courts to host higher-level tournaments and competitions.

Allan Wainwright, Wānaka Area Recreation Manager, said that the timing of the install was important to get right and has been chosen to minimise disruption.

“We know the summer holidays are a popular time for casual play, but it’s actually our quietest period for community group bookings, larger leagues and tournaments. Closing now means we can get the new floor in with the least possible impact on the clubs and groups who use the centre year-round.”

“We’re excited to offer sporting groups a better product and hopefully see some returning faces at the indoor courts. To keep people active during the closure, Paetara Aspiring Central will extend its operating hours to accommodate as many people as possible.”

Paetara Aspiring Central, off Reece Crescent, will go from operating 6 days per week to operating 7 days per week during the closure period. Opening hours will also be extended on Saturday. The full hours of operation will be:

  • Monday to Friday – 9.00am to 9.00pm

  • Saturday and Sunday – 8.00am to 5.00pm

WRC will mark the opening of the new floor along with its 10-year birthday celebration with a community event on 13 February 2027.
