Upcoming work on Edith Cavell Bridge, Arthurs Point
Next week Downer will be carrying out tree felling and concrete block removal work at Edith Cavell Bridge.
Next week Downer will be carrying out tree felling and concrete block removal work at Edith Cavell Bridge. From Tuesday 27 October to Thursday 29 October (7.00am-5.00pm), the bridge will close for periods of up to 10 minutes at a time to allow abseil crews to work safely. Please allow extra time for your journey or consider an alternative route.
The bridge will then be fully closed on Friday 30 October (9.00am-3.00pm) while crews remove a large concrete block attached to the bridge abutment. The road will reopen between 11.30am-12.30pm to let any traffic through.
The block is believed to be a remnant of the bridge's original construction and is being removed as a precaution after routine inspections identified it may have recently moved.
During the closure, specialist crews will abseil beneath the bridge to cut the block into sections before it is lifted out. Due to the nature of the work and the safety requirements for crews working at height, the operation must be carried out during daylight hours and cannot be undertaken safely overnight.
During the full closure, motorists will need to follow the detour via Malaghans Road, Dalefield Road and SH6. See map below for details.

We know this work will be disruptive and appreciate your patience while this important safety work is completed.
