Work to begin on Golf Course Road and Ballantyne Road roundabout
The project is expected to be substantially completed by December 2026.
Work to upgrade the Golf Course Road and Ballantyne Road intersection will begin next week, with the project expected to be substantially completed by December 2026.
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), working with Isaac Construction, is upgrading the intersection with a new ‘peanut-shaped’ roundabout.
QLDC Property and Infrastructure General Manager Tony Avery said the upgrade would provide a safer layout for motorists and pedestrians.
“We’re building a ‘peanut-shaped’ roundabout, which is effectively two small, connected roundabouts. The design fits within the existing intersection better than a larger conventional roundabout and encourages vehicles to travel through at lower speeds, improving safety for all road users,” said Mr Avery.
To complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, the Golf Course Road/Ballantyne Road intersection will be closed to through traffic from Wednesday 14 October until December.
A detour will be in place via Wānaka-Luggate Highway and Sir Tim Wallis Drive, or Brownston Street and McDougall Street. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works. Cyclists travelling through the site will need to dismount and walk.
Businesses in the area will remain open throughout the work and access to properties will be maintained.
The work is expected to generate some noise, dust and vibration, and planned water and power shut-offs will also be required. Affected residents will be notified of any shutdowns in advance.
The main works are expected to be completed in December, with the intersection open for the Christmas holiday period. Some work outside the carriageway may continue in the new year, and some night work may be required to help complete the project efficiently.
The new roundabout will replace the existing temporary roundabout and include a fourth leg connecting directly to Three Parks. The upgraded intersection will also enable the Schools to Pools Active Travel Route to be extended.
QLDC acknowledges the disruption the project will create and thanks residents, businesses and road users for their patience while the upgrade is completed.
