New Queenstown Lakes water services company named Alpine Waters
Alpine Waters is the name of the new company that will provide drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services across the Queenstown Lakes District.
Established by Queenstown Lakes District Council under the Government's Local Water Done Well reforms, Alpine Waters is wholly owned by the council and governed by an independent board of directors. The company will start delivering the district's water services from 1 July next year.
The new structure means a dedicated focus on delivering safe, sustainable water services, and a greater ability to plan and invest for the long term to support the district’s growth.
Alpine Waters' Board of Directors chairman Dr Julian Elder said deciding on a name was an important step in building the company, one that signals its connection to the community and district it will serve.
"While there is still a lot of work to be done, a name makes the company real for people, with colours and an identity drawn from the landscape and rivers that connect our communities. We have been deliberate about doing this simply and efficiently to create something that belongs to the entire district."
Dr Elder said a name was only the start – "who we are will really be shown in how we turn up and deliver for our communities".
The company's colours are drawn directly from the region's rivers, lakes and mountains, and its logo takes its shape from the district's river systems seen from above. The look is clean, designed to be applied at low cost and will develop as the company grows, he said.
Queenstown Lakes District Mayor John Glover said the name chosen was significant.
“Whilst we know our water comes from the alpine catchments, it implies to me that how we manage, consume and dispose of water in this District must support the attributes that form part of an Alpine ecosystem.
“That is the ongoing challenge that the company will have to deliver on.”
For residents and businesses, nothing changes for now. Queenstown Lakes District Council will continue to provide drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services while working closely with Alpine Waters to ensure a smooth transition ahead of 1 July 2027.
