Skippers Bridge engineering report released

The structure remains closed to all users until further notice.

Skippers Bridge Istock

We’ve published an engineering report on the Skippers Bridge, following recent notification the structure would remain closed to all users until further notice.

Detailed investigations undertaken in late 2025 identified failures of the wires in the cables used to suspend Skippers Bridge in place, which means we’ve been unable to safely assess what load the bridge can currently support and its integrity. For this reason, the bridge must remain closed to all vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians to ensure public safety.

The report also outlines the wider condition of the 124-year-old bridge, including several factors that make repairs complex.

A number of high-level options for the future of the structure are identified. These will require further investigation and development before they can be properly costed and presented in full for a decision by QLDC’s Elected Members..

In the meantime, the public is asked to stay off the bridge and follow all closure signage and barriers in place.
